  • In 1915, Alabama author Robert Gibbons is born in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
  • In 1961, Alabama author Harper Lee is awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her book To Kill a Mockingbird.
  • In 1998, the Harper Lee Award for Alabama's Distinguished Writer is given to Alabama author Albert Murray at the Alabama Writers Symposium in Monroeville, Ala.
  • In 2009, the Harper Lee Award for Alabama's Distinguished Writer is given to Alabama author Rick Bragg at the Alabama Writers Symposium in Monroeville, Ala.
